About Us

The Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance (PWA) Inc. is a non-profit environmental organization that works to enhance and maintain the Petitcodiac and Memramcook Rivers and their tributaries. Our actions are guided by what we want to leave behind for future generations. The PWA is a registered environmental charity that promotes watershed awareness, encourages the community to take part in identifying environmental problems, and follows through with actions to restore and protect the watershed.

Education

Information collected through our monitoring program and by being “out-in-the-field” is used to help decision makers at the local and provincial level. We work with community members, developers, government officials and contractors. Our group promotes ‘best management practices’ when developing near a watercourse or sensitive area. We report issues and problems identified in the watershed to the appropriate authorities.

We also conduct school visits where students can learn about watershed ecology and science, environmental practices and science. We continue to develop our program each year to meet the ever-changing needs of the communities within our watershed’s boundaries.

Community

Our watershed is home to many people and other organisms, which means the environmental conditions of our ecosystems are an integral part of our everyday lives. Turtle Creek is within our watershed’s boundaries, and provides drinking water to all of Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe, reaching approximately 160,000 residents.

The Petitcodiac and Memramcook Rivers and their tributaries are also used for fishing, hunting, trapping, canoeing, bird watching, kayaking, camping, and more. Activities within these watersheds are endless: working, playing and enjoying nature.

Science

Since 1997, the group has been involved in a water quality monitoring program of established sites in Petitcodiac tributaries of concern or interest. Since then, we expanded our horizons to include fish population monitoring, education and fieldwork programs for local species at risk, stormwater management awareness campaigns, riparian clean-ups, and more!

Partnerships are a key part of our group’s success. If you would like to discuss a possible a partnership with us, please give us a call or send us an e-mail through this website. Please read through the rest of our website for further detail about our various projects!
