Breau Creek |

Description: Breau Creek is located in the central area of the Memramcook watershed. The Breau Creek watershed has an area of approximately 60,25 km². Near its mouth, Breau Creek is influenced by tides. In its lower section, Breau Creek flows through a rural area with marshlands, whereas its median section moves along a uninhabited wooded area, but there is still human activity present (quarries).
Physical Habitat: The Physical Habitat of Breau Creek in its lower section (between Route 106 and the Palmer Road bridge) is indicative of a region that is influenced by the tides (mainly 70%-80% and more silt/mud/sediment) and the water is sometimes cloudy. In the central and upper sections (from Palmer Road up to the quarry), the physical habitat improves considerably, and the substrate is composed mainly of gravel, of rocks, and sand, and the water quality seems good. A few fish have been spotted, including a trout and an eel. Several larvae and nymphs were present under the rocks. Finally, a beaver dam is under construction.
Possible pollution sources In the lower section of Breau Creek (between Route 106 and Palmer Road bridge), important construction is being done on the true left bank, near the small bridge on Route 6. Next, the creek runs near a farming zone (hay, cattle) where the standard buffer zone does not seem to be respected. In this section of the creek, several rust-colored spots can be seen in the bed of the creek, as well as along the banks. A few signs of erosion are also visible on each side of the banks near Palmer Road bridge.
Higher, in the central section of Breau Creek (between Palmer Road bridge and East Memramcook Road), a bridge that is possibly used by ATVs and snowmobiles crosses the creek. In this sector, certain solidification construction is being done on the true left bank before the bridge (wall of rocks with metal fencing). A water source is present in this area. Next, there is a small bridge. There are also signs of erosion near the second bridge. The water is relavitely clear.
In the upper section of Breau Creek (between East Memramcook Road and the main quarry), a small tributary brings sediment into the creek. The sand and gravel present along the banks of the creek seem to be coming from a dirt road in the proximity. Moreover, trash and heavy objects have been disposed of in two areas along the true left bank of Breau Creek. Finally, an important pile of rocks originating from a quarry, that is situated a bit higher, is obstructing a portion of the creek. Very good water quality when it does not rain, but its color changes radically to brown when it rains.
Water Quality The last sample that were taken on Breau Creek (2001-2002) seem to indicate a good water quality, despite that the average E-Coli rate recorded was 301.5 MPN/100mL and that the average dissolved oxygen rate was of 10.3mg/L. In fact, even though the average E-Coli rate is slightly higher to standards recommended for class B, which is of 200 MPN/100mL, it is in great part caused by selective events (precipitations). Consequently, we can be optimistic in all matters pertaining to the water quality of Breau Creek. However, we must consider that certain actions will have to be undertaken in order to control the amount of sediment originating from dirt roads, as well as from active and unactive quarries.Considering the willingness of the population to improve the water quality of Breau Creek, we believe that class B is the most advisable for the moment. Finally, by putting together a few efforts and the support of the community, it is quite possible that this creek could reach the A category withing a few years.

Excessive amount of sediment possibly due to the presence of quarries in the area. |
Aluminum, Cadmium**, Copper, Dissolved Oxygen, E-coli, Iron, Hardness, Lead, Suspended Sediments, Turbidity. | **Given that the level of detection of Cadmium is superior to Canadian standards relative to water quality, Cadmium appears in the highlights when detected, but is not generally in any way elevated.
Recommended Preliminary Classification
Class B : upstream of PWMG 52
Recommended actions
>> Bank Stabilization in necessary areas. >> Reduce the obstacles that prevent fish passage. >> See to preserving the banks to their natural state. >> See that provicial regulations on buffer zones be respected. >> See to reducing the amount of sediment during rainy periods by identifying potential sources and determining actions in order to limit the impact of the streaming waters. >> Further evaluated the impact of extraction (quarries) and forestry activities on the state and water quality of Breau Creek.
