Join us on March 19th, 2024, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the Salisbury Lions Club for an update on our field season and to share your insights on potential remediation sites. Learn about the Aquatic Ecosystem Recovery Fund (AERF) from the Department of Fisheries and Ocean and help shape future projects focused on erosion control and water quality.
The AERF team and partners have had a productive season conducting electrofishing, CABIN, Rapid Geomorphic Assessment (RAG), Rapid Stream Assessment Techniques (RSAT) assessments and wood turtle surveys. Additionally, we have visited potential sites to identify areas affected by erosion and selected locations for remediation. Our primary goal is to support species at risk (SAR) by remediating erosion and helping the river reclaim its natural flow and meander.
Attendees can expect to learn about:
- The importance of locating/mitigating erosion for species at risk
- How erosion impacts species at risk and the broader ecosystem
- How to manage waterside properties to protect ecosystem health and their land from erosion
- The value of conducting geomorphic and stream assessments
We will also share details about the project:
- Where we conducted RGA and RSAT, and the results we have obtained
- The results from the habitat surveys performed by our partners
- Upcoming habitat improvement projects and the technical and naturalized methods we will use, such as FlexMSE bags and native vegetation
We hope to learn from the public:
- Areas containing critical cold-water habitat
- Areas that are affected by erosion for potential future remediation
- Local insights that could be adopted in our practices
We are focused on achieving the meeting’s goals by fostering an engaging discussion that promotes mutual understanding of how erosion remediation benefits species at risk and supports a healthier ecosystem.
We’d love to hear your thoughts and expertise! Please feel free to invite others who are interested or knowledgeable about these issues. Refreshments will be provided! We hope to see you there! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at olisaemeka.n@petitcodiacwatershed.org
