With our last round of stormwater testing planned for later this August, sampling for the Stormwater project this year is nearly at an end. Since our field work first kicked off in early May, the PWA has managed to successfully collect stormwater samples monthly at both of our sites within the Riverview area. This August marks the final sample we need to complete this year’s testing, so we are patiently awaiting a good storm to head out to collect the last of our samples.
Early results from this year’s samples have shown small amounts of petroleum hydrocarbons as well as high levels of orthophosphates entering Riverview’s waterways from the stormwater outlets. With this in mind we would like to encourage Riverview residents not to perform oil changes over storm drains and to reduce the use of fertilizers where possible. Pollutants from these activities flow into our waterways during heavy rain events which can pose a risk to the local environment and the people and animals within them.
